I joined USDAW at the same time I started with Lincolnshire Coop in 2011. I became a Shop Steward in 2012, Health and Safety Rep in 2013, was elected to the Divisional Equality Forum in 2014, became Branch Secretary in 2015 and joined the East Midlands Federation Committee in 2016 of which I am now chair.

The Union currently has more than 800 specially trained Union Leaning Reps (ULRs) to help deliver accessible and affordable courses for members. David T. Wade has been elected as an official representative for the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw) at Tesco’s Distribution Centre near Goole, East Yorkshire. The role includes union meetings related to Usdaw members’ disciplinary issues and includes matters related to sickness, absences, holidays, flexible working, performance and conduct. Representatives must be either a recognised Usdaw Rep and/or a colleague. Usdaw members have the right to be represented by an Usdaw Rep or by a colleague.

Usdaw Reps are among the best trained in the Trade Union movement. Any Usdaw member can volunteer to be a Rep. Reps acquire many new skills, eg how to prepare a case and represent members, how to communicate better with both members and management, how to plan a campaign, how to run a meeting.
